What ChatGPT is
ChatGPT is OpenAI's chat product, powered by its GPT models. You type, it answers, and you can build custom GPTs, store memory, and connect a handful of tools. For quick answers and drafting, it is excellent and hugely popular.
The catch is structural, not about quality. ChatGPT is a closed product: your conversations, your custom GPTs and your memory all live inside OpenAI's walls, run on OpenAI's models, and follow OpenAI's rules. You are renting a very good assistant, but you do not own what you build with it.
